My Education Dashboard may show Recorded Canvas activity for courses in asynchronous learning programs. These numbers can help you understand whether a student has been interacting with a course recently, but they are not an exact measurement of study time, attendance, or learning.
What is Canvas activity?
Canvas maintains a cumulative activity-time value for each student enrollment in a course.
In simple terms, Canvas records some of the time a student spends actively viewing and navigating course content. My Education Dashboard uses that cumulative value to provide a clearer view of recent course engagement.
You may see three numbers:
- Today
- The amount of new Canvas activity that My Education Dashboard has observed for this course during the current day.
- This week
- The amount of new Canvas activity that My Education Dashboard has observed for this course during the current Sunday-through-Saturday week.
- Total
- The cumulative activity time currently reported by Canvas for that course enrollment.
Example
This means Canvas currently reports 12 hours and 17 minutes of cumulative recorded activity for the course. My Education Dashboard has observed 1 hour and 47 minutes of increases to that total during the current week, including 23 minutes observed today.
It does not necessarily mean the student studied for exactly those amounts of time.
Why isn't this the same as study time?
Canvas activity is a technical measurement of interaction within the Canvas learning system. It cannot see everything a student does while learning. For example:
- Work in the Canvas mobile app may not be fully represented.
- Course-group activity may not be represented.
- Some external learning tools or websites may not contribute normally.
- Offline reading, written work, and studying printed material are not visible to Canvas.
- Conversations with teachers or tutors are not visible.
- Long videos may not continuously add activity without additional Canvas interaction.
- Very brief course visits may not add activity.
Recorded Canvas activity is an engagement signal, not a stopwatch.
Why can the numbers update later?
Canvas activity totals are cumulative and may not change immediately while a student is working. My Education Dashboard periodically observes the cumulative value reported by Canvas. When that value increases, the dashboard records the difference.
- Activity may appear after a delay.
- A student may currently be working even though the displayed value has not changed yet.
- The dashboard should not be used to determine whether a student is online at this exact moment.
How are Today and This week calculated?
Canvas provides My Education Dashboard with a cumulative total. Canvas does not directly provide the dashboard's Today and This week values. My Education Dashboard calculates them by comparing cumulative totals observed over time.
Earlier observation5h 18m
Later observation5h 41m
Newly observed activityapproximately 23m
Only positive, comparable increases are counted. The comparison does not reveal exactly when each minute occurred.
Why might I see — instead of 0m?
A dash (—) means the dashboard does not have enough reliable information to calculate that number. It does not mean zero.
This can happen when tracking has just begun, there are not yet enough comparable observations, there was a long gap between observations, Canvas reset an activity counter, the student's Canvas enrollment changed, activity information was unavailable, or enough reliable stored history is not available.
By contrast, 0m means the dashboard had enough information to compare the period and observed no increase in Recorded Canvas activity. This distinction is important.
What happens when tracking starts?
If Canvas already reports five hours of activity when My Education Dashboard first begins observing a course, those five hours must not be treated as activity that happened today.
Future increases can then be measured from that starting point.
What if Canvas resets the number?
Occasionally a Canvas enrollment or cumulative activity value can change in a way that makes the new value incomparable with the previous one. When that happens, My Education Dashboard establishes a new starting point.
It does not create negative activity, combine unrelated totals, or invent activity to fill a gap. The dashboard intentionally prefers an unknown value over a number that cannot be supported reliably.
How precise are the times?
Displayed values are deliberately conservative. My Education Dashboard does not round activity upward.
Less than one minute is shown as <1m. Completed minutes are shown without rounding upward. The display does not imply second-level precision, and the underlying Canvas measurement is itself approximate.
How should parents use these numbers?
Recorded Canvas activity is one piece of context. It may help you ask whether there has been recent interaction with a course, whether activity is occurring across several courses or concentrated in one, and whether recent Canvas engagement has changed.
Consider it alongside submitted and missing coursework, grades, instructor feedback, recently graded work, scheduled events, instructor announcements and guidance, and conversations with the student and school.
A low activity value does not automatically mean a student is not working. A high activity value does not automatically mean the student is making appropriate academic progress.
